Do not rely on memory
Hollow Knight is designed around returning with new tools, so feeling like something was missed is normal. Track every region with five checks: map, bench, travel, ability gates, and collectibles.
Check these five things in every region
| Item | Confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Map | Bought and updated | Cleanup becomes much harder without it |
| Bench | Nearest safe bench | Reduces death-run frustration |
| Stag / tram | Travel opened | Late cleanup crosses many regions |
| Ability gates | Ledges, acid, dark rooms, locked doors | Shows what can wait |
| Collectibles | Grubs, shards, charms, Pale Ore | Completion and achievements depend on them |
Cleanup route advice
| Stage | What to do |
|---|---|
| Early | Mark obvious unreachable entrances instead of forcing full clears |
| After Mantis Claw | Revisit Crossroads, Greenpath, and Fungal Wastes for high exits |
| After Dream Nail | Track Dream Warriors, Whispering Roots, and Essence sources |
| Late abilities | Clean Grubs, shards, charms, and Pale Ore region by region |
| Before 112% | Check bosses, Colosseum, Godhome, charms, and upgrades separately |
Common misses
- Walking past Cornifer without enough Geo to buy the map.
- Entering a region without finding a bench, then assuming the route is wrong after a death.
- Forgetting to revisit high exits after Mantis Claw.
- Trying to collect items that require late movement too early.
- Tracking Grubs but forgetting Charm Notches, Pale Ore, and shards.
