How to choose charms
Do not judge a charm in isolation. Pick charms around the problem you are solving: routing, survival, boss damage, collectible cleanup, or Pantheon consistency.
| Situation | Build goal | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| First playthrough | more safety and less navigation friction | new players learning the map |
| Boss attempts | stronger damage windows and safer spacing | players who know the moves but need consistency |
| Spell play | more Soul and stronger spells | players using Vengeful Spirit, Dive, and Shriek often |
| Cleanup | easier tracking and faster movement | players collecting grubs, shards, and charms |
Beginner exploration set
- Wayward Compass: very useful while you are still learning Hallownest.
- Gathering Swarm: helps early economy when Geo is easy to miss.
- Quick Focus: shortens heal windows and raises survival.
- Longnail or Mark of Pride: improves spacing and makes safer hits easier.
If you are low on notches, keep Compass and Quick Focus first. Once you know a region, swap Compass into damage, spacing, or movement utility.
Stable boss set
For newer players, consistency beats maximum damage.
- Quick Focus: gives more recovery chances after mistakes.
- Longnail / Mark of Pride: safer range, fewer bad trades.
- Quick Slash: add it once you understand the boss pattern.
- Shaman Stone: strong if you actively use spells.
When a boss feels impossible, diagnose the death. If you cannot heal, keep Quick Focus. If you cannot reach safely, add range. If the fight lasts too long, add Quick Slash or stronger spell damage.
Pantheon preparation
Pantheons reward repeatable, low-panic play. Prepare two builds:
| Style | Core idea | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Nail consistency | range, attack speed, safety | most close-range bosses |
| Spell burst | Soul generation and spell damage | bosses you already read well |
Before serious Pantheon runs, upgrade your nail, masks, Soul vessels, and charm notches. Missing upgrades turn practice into unnecessary low-margin attempts.
Charm FAQ
What are the best beginner charms in Hollow Knight?
Wayward Compass, Gathering Swarm, Quick Focus, and Longnail are strong beginner picks because they solve navigation, Geo collection, healing speed, and short attack range.
Is Quick Focus worth it?
Yes, especially for a first clear. It does not replace good movement, but it turns some unsafe-looking healing windows into real recovery options.
Mark of Pride or Longnail?
Mark of Pride is stronger if you can afford the notches. Longnail is still useful when your build is tight. In boss fights, safer range often matters more than raw damage.
Spell build or nail build for beginners?
Nail consistency is easier for beginners because it is direct and does not depend as much on Soul management. Try Shaman Stone and Spell Twister once you understand spell windows and Soul income.
Adjust by notch stage
| Stage | Build idea | Keep |
|---|---|---|
| Very few notches | Solve navigation and survival first | Compass, Quick Focus, Longnail |
| Midgame notches | Add efficiency | Mark of Pride, Shaman Stone, Soul Catcher |
| Boss practice | Swap based on death pattern | Range if you miss, safety if you cannot heal |
| Late / Godhome | Repeatable boss chains | Quick Slash, Mark of Pride, Shaman Stone-style cores |
Four practical build directions
| Direction | Core charms | Best for | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner exploration | Compass, Gathering Swarm, Quick Focus | First routing, Cornifer search, early Geo | Lower value once you know the map |
| Safe nail play | Longnail / Mark of Pride, Quick Focus | Hornet, Mantis Lords, Soul Master practice | Conservative if chasing speed |
| Spell burst | Shaman Stone, Soul Catcher, Spell Twister | Players using spell windows | Harder for Soul-starved beginners |
| Cleanup | Compass and movement / utility ideas | Grubs, shards, Stag Stations, map cleanup | Not ideal for boss chains |
Swap checklist
- Are you lost or losing fights? Use navigation charms only for routing.
- Are you missing hits or getting hit? Add range for misses, safety for damage taken.
- Are you sitting on full Soul? Try spell-focused charms.
- Are you taking exploration charms into bosses? Swap economy and navigation out before attempts.
